I have been running 6.10.43 on a Mac for many weeks now, probably over three months (before that, other versions for a couple of years, on this very computer). All that time, no problems except when I tried to get a GPU card to work, eventually solved that (beginning of April). All of a sudden as of the day before yesterday, BOINC has stopped working completely. As far as I can tell, the client itself is not running. BOINC Manager tries to start, but quits after a few seconds (maybe just because the client isn't running ?). I tried installing the latest 6.10.58, no luck. I tried to revert back to .36, but also no luck. Uninstalled using the software provided in the BOINC download package, and rebooted and then reinstalled with no luck. Then tried .43 again, and .58 again, no luck. Just to confirm to those reading this, I rebooted between each try, even though reboots in the past never seemed to be necessary when upgrading BOINC. Tried disconnecting the GPU card, but this did not make any difference. Not sure what else to try at this point. All other programs I have seem to run fine, so I don't think it is a hardware issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers
Richard

it is saying 'Exit requested by user" which of course I did not, but there are errors in trying to delete some files ..... is there something I can delete manually before I try starting BOINC that will stop it doing this ?

Just askin' is all ....

Cheers

There seems to be something amiss with your Einstein project directory or with the client_state.xml file, as S5R4 data files shouldn't be downloaded any longer. And certainly BOINC shouldn't try to delete files that are currently being downloaded.

Do you have any access via BOINC manager, maybe for a short time after the start? If not, does the BOINC client keep running nevertheless and you could use boinccmd? If so, try suspending execution and see if the manager gets usable again.

If you don't have too many Einstein tasks running/ready to report, a reset of the Einstein project might help. That will erase all downloaded Einstein tasks, though.

Gruß,
Gundolf
[edit]There have been threads on the Einstein forum explaining how to remove those h1 and l1 data files from your project directory and the client_state.xml file without destroying either of those.[/edit]

On the Mac, if the Manager launched the client and then the Manager crashes, the Client will automatically exit. Unfortunately, it will report "Exit requested by user," which is misleading.

Can you check the system log by running /Applications/Utilities/Console to see if it reports a reason why the manager quit?
Also check in stderrgui.txt, stdoutgui.txt and stderrdae.txt in your BOINC data directory for clues.

There seems to be something amiss with your Einstein project directory or with the client_state.xml file, as S5R4 data files shouldn't be downloaded any longer.

Here is a current task I have for Einstein:

h1_0999.05_S5R4__571_S5GC1a

and here are some of the data files listed that task needs as per client_state.xml:

DataFiles1=h1_0999.05_S5R4;h1_0999.05_S5R7;l1_0999.05_S5R4;l1_0999.05_S5R7;h1_0999.10_S5R4;h1_0999.10_S5R7;l1_0999.10_S5R4;l1_0999.10_S5R7

So it would appear that the S5R4 data files are indeed still required.

Oops, you are right, but the other statement is still valid:
BOINC shouldn't try to delete files that are currently being downloaded.
:-)

Thanks for the confirmation that something was going wrong inside BOINC and it wasn't me or mu computer ! No, I had no access to the manager at all, it was not up on screen long enough and it had not transferred access to the user anyway before it crashed. Since I wanted to get back to crunching data, I did end up uninstalling the BOINC software, renaming the data section folder ('cause at the time I thought I might be able to fix something and get back in and continue later), and then reinstalled BOINC and it all worked fine. I then found out that BOINC can be too smart, 'cause of course it still instantly dumped all my old workunits, so I can't go back and restart the old ones in the end. Unless it does this same thing again, I will let bygones be bygones and not try to figure out which data files were causing it to crash. Thanks for the comments submitted !

Cheers
