Hi!

I would like to install boinc client on several lab machines as a service. I used the ENABLEPROTECTEDAPPLICATIONEXECUTION2 option to do it. My only problem is that when the machine is restarted and someone logs in I don't want the manager to be started. (I don't really need manager on those machines at all) Is there any option to do it?

Thanks

This is possible, as it's been mentioned several times here, but I don't know how to do it.

I can't find that topic. If someone remembers the solution or the name of the topic, please let me know.

Thanks.

There used to be an option LAUNCHPROGRAM in 5.x. But somehow it's removed from the 6.x versions.

Prof Google, my permanent sidekick spat out as second hit on the query "boinc installer command line instructions" http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Deploying_BOINC_on_networks. I think the installer has a few (7-8) that for instance with /a allows unpacking and /S running the install in silent mode.

Running the installer manually, untick the All User box. Maybe that will not set up the BM in the startup folder.

I use google and know that page (I should have mentioned...)
And no, the untick on the all user option doesn't solve the program. It will start whenever the user, who installed the boinc, logs on...

Does that not self-answer the question... the user, "who installed the boinc"? To me it means if you install and someone else logs in the BM should not show up. Certainly if you go into the ../allusers/startup folder and delete the shortcut it should not.

edit: think there also lurking some registry run key that if created needs manual delete. I've never tried, just my BM does not load even when I self-installed under my user ID, with admin rights.

Now I'm totally confused:

I installed the boinc as an admin and unticked the "allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" option and ticked the "Protected application execution" option. After the install I logged in as an unprivileged user and the manager started (????) but the core client didn't (???). I need the opposite. I want the core client running all the time but not the manager. We used to run the 5.x versions as service which was running all the time (except when the user was active). Can I solve the same with the 6.x versions??? Unfortunately the service install is no longer an option...

"Protected application execution" is the service install! (Or should be ;-)

I think you would do well by doing a clean install, after first uninstalling, then removing all and everything of BOINC, including the registry entries. Then, only then, install as admin, as true admin... tick the protected execution and untick the all users. There should be nobody getting an auto launching BM but the admin. As said, it's not doing it on mine... not Vista, not W7, not Linux.

If the BM is exited and it's remembered that the service should be ended, then that will happen if you log out. In the BM under options there's 2 boxes:

Run Manager at Login ?
Enable Manager exit dialog?

Are these selected resp. unselected?

Additionally, make sure that BOINC Manager isn't starting from the Startup folder. For a complete uninstall, see here.
