I run the BOINC client on two computers ... one to do the actual work, and a laptop where I just use the GUI as a convenient way to check on the work computer. I have successfully connected the laptop to the work computer using Advanced->Select Computer many times.

However, I would like to have the laptop GUI automatically connect to the work computer's client as soon as I bring the GUI up, instead of having to select and logon each time. Security is a secondary concern since this is on a private network.

Is there some XML file where I can store the name and password of the work computer, so the laptop GUI will just connect there instead of trying to connect to a non-functional local client first?

No, there is none of those. In Windows the values are stored in the registry, while under OS X it'll be part of the a file in /Library/Applications Support/BOINC/ (or /Library/Applications Support/BOINC DATA/) .. not sure which one though.

As far as I know there is no way to make it do this either, exactly because of what you touched there: security.

Just a thought, but why not use some form of remote admin instead?

I log into my BOINC boxes using TightVNC connecting to either TightVNC for Windows or Vino for Linux at the other end. Then I just open up the BOINC manager as if I was sitting at the remote machine.

Much more flexible as it also allows me to do other OS related tasks.

The next version of BOINC (currently testing as v6.12.4) will allow you to start the Manager with the hostname, username, and password as parameters on the command line to achieve what you want.

In Windows, I would do that by fiddling with the properties of a shortcut file: you want to use the Mac as the viewer, if I'm reading you right. I'm not sure how, or even whether, it's possible to fine-tune whatever your equivalent or a 'shortcut' is, but it might be worth testing - if you don't mind testing the rest of the manager while you're at it!

You wouldn't need to upgrade to 'worker' machine to v6.12.4 - just the 'viewer', to get access to the new manager.

I forget that 6.12.4 has that capability. ;-)

Perfect! Thanks! I've waited this long ... I can wait for 6.12.4!
