I updated the 'General Preferences' for a project I participate in. I was displeased to see the following advisory: "These apply to all BOINC projects in which you participate."

I hope that this advisory does NOT apply to me, since I have different Cross-Project IDs assigned within the different BOINC projects I participate in. To clarify to the reader, let me suggest that sentence should instead say: "These apply to all BOINC projects in which you participate which use the same Cross-Project ID."

I myself see absolutely NO REASON why I should run multiple BOINC projects on the same computer. (If the BOINC project runs out of work, I'll start up a non-BOINC project instead!) But I *do* have more than one computer running BOINC projects. And these computers do __not__ all have the same capabilities (an example would be the amount of disk space available).

Also, I run off-line, and connect to the servers only infrequently. On one of my (single-project) computers, the client downloaded new WUs which pre-empted the still-queued previous WUs. To be able to work off the previous WUs, I changed my 'General Preferences' for the project to: "give me only enough new work for one day". But, I did __NOT__ want this 'General Preferences' change to apply to any other BOINC project.

My point is that the computers I use have differences, and the projects I run have differences.

WHY then should BOINC attempt to fit a "one size must fit all" set of 'General Preferences' to __ALL__ the BOINC projects in which I participate ?

Have you explored the possibility of using the option for location specific preferences to achieve what you want?

If you only run one project on that computer it will not affect any other project. The preferences can only migrate if there are two or more projects on the same computer....
Say you have 5 computers and run 5 different projects,one for each computer as long as you never run 2 or more on any computer you are ok....
The cross project Ids should all be the same, this is how the third party stats site keep track of your credits....
It is set up that way to aid the people who have many computers running 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 projects per computer, because it is a lot of work to change on each one...
